Schoellhorn-Albrecht Capstan with Motor Brake Housing
This unit was bought in a lot of newer capstans from a large Fortune 500 company.
It has been completely rebuilt in October 2009 with all gearbox bearings and both motor shaft bearings changed with new, all new seals and gaskets, all bolts changed to stainless steel with copper sealing washers. Also, all bolts have received never-seeze. The interior of the gearbox and all unfinished steel parts inside of it were painted red. All bearings/shafts properly pre-loaded with individual installation, less seals and brass gear shimmed for proper height adjustment. The drain plug was changed with a new magnetic plug. An oil level fill sticker was installed. New decals and labels. Unit has been shop run and tested.
5HP, 230/460 VAC, 60 Hertz, 21 / 10.5 amps, 900 rpm, Star wired, Frame 256U, TEFC, Motor serial # 00-5772A-1
At the motor the unit is 49" long. The footprint of the base measures 15" by 21.75". The base is 2" thick at the bolt holes. The bolt holes are 1 and 9/16ths in diameter. The bolt holes are centered rectangularly at 12" and 18.75".
This unit has an additional base bolted to it to make it 6" higher. This base is 1" thick mild steel and measures 26" wide and 29" in length. The four bolt holes in it are in a rectangular pattern with approx centers of 19" by 22.5".
The capstan head barrel is 8 " in diameter and the drum (the flat part of the barrel that the rope wraps on) is about 10" tall.
Altogether the head is 14" tall with a flange on top of 10.25 inches in diameter and a flange on the bottom of 12.75 inches.
Schoellhorn-Albrecht Serial # 26929, Model SA0814, Reduction 120:1, Date 1/17/06,
Job # SMR 1369.
Manufacturer's webpage for this model is: http://www.schoellhorn-albrecht.com/sa1014-capstan.html
Ratings for the same unit with a 10" diameter head are: 20,000 pounds starting and 7500 pounds running pulls and a Bollard pull of 35,000 pounds. This unit will have a slightly higher rating that those because it does have the smaller 8" diameter head versus the 10" diameter.
This unit has an electric motor brake housing with no disc or coil installed. Brake parts are about $1200 and not necessary 99% of the time. If you work on a slope or something then you might try it first, if needed you can add the brake. It is very difficult to turn one of these units from the cathead end, due to the worm gearing.
